A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Wow! After a terrible few season impacted by COVID and then rain, it was great to have a virtually uninterrupted season! This allowed us to provide a full year of football to our ever growing membership base.
In 2023 we ended up with 1,252 players, including 10 Dual Registered Girl’s, across 93 teams. Of the playing group 1001 of those were juniors, as we continue to grow in our youngest ages, especially the U6 group. We also had 384 registered female players, meaning nearly a third of the club was girls and women, a number that we proudly see grow every single year.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for 2023, starting with major sponsor – LJ Hooker, who’s support across a few difficult years has been invaluable.
Also a big thanks to our other other sponsors this season, Brown Bros Skip Bins, Besteam Sport, Johnson Brothers Mitre 10,
AVALON JUNIOR MAKES AUSTRALIA DEBUT!
September saw an incredible moment for the club, with W16/1s player Annmarie de Uriarte making her debut for the ParaMatildas.
The forward, a part of the club since U8s, has been in training squads with the team for nearly 12 months, and finally received her call up for Australia’s three match tour of Japan, played in Osaka.
Playing off the bench in games 1 and 2, and starting in game 3, de Uriarte excelled, scoring seven goals across the three games, including a hattrick in the second match, and making her mark an international level, despite being the youngest member of the squad at 15.
Annemarie’s achievements were recognised by the club when she was awarded the inaugural Player Recognition Award, at the recent Junior Presentation day. The award was accepted by her father Jamie from club vice-president Stuart Randall, as Annemarie was in Osaka preparing for game one.

A SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO VANUATU
Despite a number of travel challenges, our W16 squad returned home on Sunday following the successful resumption of the Vanuatu tour, the 9th since 2012.
The original 9 day itinerary was cut back to 7 after the group were bumped from their initial Air Vanuatu flight, and cut back further to 4 days, after their rescheduled flight was cancelled due to the Sydney airport chaos last weekend.
But despite the logistical challenges, the group still managed to spend an extremely productive few days on Etafe, with a number of community visits, football projects and even a little down time!
Arriving in the early hours of Thursday morning, the group grabbed a few hours sleep before reconvening at 7am and heading off to drive around the whole island on a donations drop. With 27 containers of goods donated by the public, the club and one of our sponsors Mike Pawley, and delivered to Port
VANUATU TOUR PREPS IN FULL SWING
After a three year COVID enforced hiatus, the traditional W16 tour to Vanuatu is back for 2023. Started in 2012, the tour is used to promote women’s sport in the region, to offer the team the chance to play against local opposition and allow the Avalon community to make charitable donations to projects on the islands.
This year we have 21 girls from our 2 W16 teams travelling at the end of June for a 9 day trip that will encompass 3 matches, community visits, cyclone recovery work and a meeting at the Australian High Commision in Port Vila.
The trip is entirely self-funded with the team commencing fundraising in August 2022 with numerous cake bakes and BBQs at local events. Stayed tuned to this page for more details on the tour and the fundraising efforts. If you’d like to assist with the tour or sponsor the girls, please contact stuartjrandall@gmail.com.
