Disorder Reports

A disturbance involving an intoxicated person was reported on Riviera Avenue, Avalon Beach, just after 12:30am on Sunday, 31 May. NSW Police attended the area.

Another disorder matter was recorded shortly after 8:00pm on Friday, 5 June, when NSW Police received information about a group of youths gathered near Barrenjoey Road, Avalon Beach.

Assault Report

NSW Police attended Plateau Road, Avalon Beach, shortly after 9:30am on Sunday, 31 May, after a person was reportedly assaulted.

Theft And Break-In Matters

A reported break-in on Central Road, Avalon Beach, was referred to NSW Police shortly after 11:00am on Sunday, 31 May.

In Newport, police received a report shortly before 1:30pm on Sunday, 31 May, that goods had been stolen from a store on Barrenjoey Road.

Police were also sent to Livingstone Place, Newport, just before midday on Tuesday, 2 June, following a reported break-in.

A vehicle parked on Bardo Road, Newport, was the subject of a property theft report made to NSW Police just after 5:00am on Thursday, 4 June.

Traffic Incidents

On Ocean Road, Palm Beach, NSW Police and firefighters from Avalon Station responded just before 12:30am on Saturday, 30 May, after a single vehicle hit a parked car. No injuries were reported, and the vehicles were later towed.

A separate collision report was made to NSW Police just before 9:45am on Saturday, 30 May, on Barrenjoey Road, Palm Beach.

In Avalon Beach, NSW Police received a report just before 4:30pm on Wednesday, 3 June, about a motor vehicle collision on Elouera Road.

Fire and Rescue NSW Avalon Station and NSW Ambulance attended Plateau Road, Bilgola Plateau, shortly after 1:00pm on Monday, 1 June, after a vehicle hit a parked car. A man in his 80s was assessed by paramedics for a chest injury and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

On Barrenjoey Road, Newport, near Bramley Avenue, NSW Ambulance came across a two-car collision shortly after 6:00pm on Thursday, 4 June. No injuries were reported.

Fire And Hazard Responses

Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Avalon Station were called to Bilgola Beach just after 10:15am on Sunday, 31 May, after a fire was reported in the sand dunes. Crews found a campfire and put it out with sand.

A gas leak was reported on Queens Parade, Newport, just before 9:00am on Monday, 1 June. Fire and Rescue NSW Mona Vale Station attended and found that street works had damaged a gas line. The road was closed until Jemena arrived to carry out repairs.

Later that day, just after 4:00pm, Fire and Rescue NSW Mona Vale Station responded to smoke reported at a Grandview Drive property in Newport. Firefighters found a small section of bush alight near a home and extinguished it using a hose reel from their truck.

Beach Reports

A Surf Life Saving NSW drone patrol detected a two-metre shark off the southern end of Bilgola Beach just after 11:30am on Monday, 1 June. No swimmers were at risk, and the beach was not patrolled at the time.

Another shark sighting was recorded just before 2:00pm the same day, when a Surf Life Saving NSW drone patrol identified a one-metre shark about 100 metres off the northern end of Bilgola Beach. No swimmers were at risk, and the beach remained unpatrolled.

Background To The Bilgola Beach Proposal

The site at 2A Allen Avenue, Bilgola Beach, contains a dwelling originally constructed in 1951. The property was purchased in 2019, and a development application was lodged in 2022 seeking approval for a large replacement home.

That initial proposal attracted objections focused on height, scale and neighbourhood character. It was refused, and an appeal to the Land and Environment Court was dismissed in April 2024.

Revised Application And Court Outcome

A revised development application, DA2024/1708, was submitted on 8 January 2025. The application sought approval for demolition works and construction of a dwelling house including a swimming pool.

Following a deemed refusal, the matter proceeded to court. The appeal was upheld on 16 April 2025, subject to amended plans. The planning register lists the determination level as court and confirms approval status.

The cost of work recorded in the planning register is $4,264,221. Separately, the redevelopment has been described as a $5 million project.

The register also records an exhibition period from 8 October to 22 October 2025, which appears after the determination date.

Design And Amenity Considerations

Objections raised during the process referred to the size of the proposed dwelling, the number of rooms, rooftop recreation areas, privacy impacts from overlooking, and potential loss of sunlight and views. Additional concerns related to excavation depth, landscaping provision and the fit of the development within its surroundings.

Planning arguments supporting the proposal maintained that remaining height exceedances were minor and that similar multi-storey homes exist nearby.

Community Response And Petition Activity

Community opposition included written submissions and petition activity linked to the proposal. A previous petition was reported as having attracted more than 1,500 signatures opposing the development.

Community posts continued to encourage further petition participation and urged an appeal of the court’s approval, with sign-up activity promoted in the Avalon area.

With the appeal upheld, the approval allows demolition of the existing dwelling and construction of the approved design, subject to the amended plans attached to the determination.

5 star. We had a luncheon with friends, table for 4, end December. Such a beautiful experience on the eye, the palate & the surrounds. Delicious. I used to come here 20 years ago, same place, different hosts now. It lived up to its reputation of a gorgeous & humble place to dine. The stylish service was excellent, friendly & knowledgeable. The wine list has a simplicity of selection, yet a good selection & perfectly paired with the menu. Lovely to stroll on Clareville Beach after lunch. A treat for us to finish off the end of a year & bring in a new one.

Went to the Clareville for a Saturday lunch and could not have enjoyed it more. Staff were amazing, the food was delicious and the wine was perfect. Went for a walk along the beach afterwards and head home feeling very relaxed. Can’t wait to find an excuse to do it again.

The most amazing, authentic Mexican food you will ever try. Staff are so lovely and friendly, always making sure you’re happy. Not to mention that the atmosphere is lively and has a traditional Mexican style. The guacamole, empanadas, barramundi tacos and birria tacos MUST be tried! We will definitely be returning soon.

We had a 5 course meal tasting and the dishes were so well presented and tasty that it completed change my mind about Mexican Food in a good way. All the flavours mixed in such way that made a perfect balance. You can’t miss this amazing Alma Restaurant at Avalon Beach. I don’t have enough words to describe it. And what about the staff??? Simply unsurpassed!! Really friendly staff. The atmosphere and decoration invites to enjoy this great experience. Very well located at the heart of Avalon Beach. Opens till late.
